*********************************************************************
Workshop on Geometric and Topological Combinatorics
- A satellite conference of ICM 2006 (http://www.icm2006.org/) -
*********************************************************************
DATES: August 31 to September 5, 2006
INVITED SPEAKERS
Alexander Barvinok, University of Michigan
Stefan Felsner, Technische Universität Berlin

PLACE: Universidad de Alcala (UAH), Alcala de Henares
The university of Alcala is one of the oldest in Europe. The
workshop will take place in its historic "Rectorado" building.
The town of Alcala de Henares itself is a charming town very
close to central Madrid, and declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
Scientific committee:
Christos Athanasiadis (Crete)
Imre Bárány (Budapest)
Anders Björner (Stockholm)
Jesús A. de Loera (Davis)
Günter Rote (Berlin)
Francisco Santos (Santander)
Emo Welzl (Zürich)
Organizing committee:
Manuel Abellanas (Madrid)
David Orden (Alcalá)
Julian Pfeifle (Barcelona)
Pedro Ramos (Alcalá)
Francisco Santos (Santander)
TOPICS: Geometric and/or topological combinatorics concerns discrete
structures that arise in a wide array of mathematical contexts, ranging
from enumerative questions about polytopes and other constructions from
linear algebra to the topology of manifolds and algebraic varieties.
This workshop is intended as an informal discussion forum for people
from such fields as combinatorics, discrete geometry, algebraic
geometry, convex geometry, algebraic topology, combinatorial
optimization and theoretical computer science, among others.
STRUCTURE: The Workshop will be intertwined with the advanced course
"Combinatorial and Computational Geometry: Trends and topics for the
future" (http://www.crm.es/ComputationalGeometry), which will take
place in the same dates and place. The scientific programs of both
activities are independent, but the timetables will be coordinated to
allow attendance to both. The workshop will consist of five
"half-days", with Sunday September 3 left free for participants to
entertain themselves.
The workshop is organized with the support of
Universidad de Cantabria,
Universidad de Alcalá,
Centre de Recerca Matematica, and
Spanish Ministry of Science and Education.
