[Compgeom-announce] PDoc position Geometry - Molecular Modeling at INRIA + Institut Pasteur

Dear Moderators,

could you please post the following?

thanks and regards, f.c.

		Postdoc position available:

		Modeling the flexibility of proteins

		INRIA Sophia-Antipolis -- Institut Pasteur

Understanding the way proteins adopt their 3D structure ---the folding
problem, or the way macro-molecular complexes get formed ---the
docking problem, are two of the most prominent challenges of
structural biology. Since proteins in vivo vibrate at various
frequencies, addressing them requires modeling protein flexibility. So
far, this modeling has essentially been done resorting to methods
based on a classical potential energy (normals modes, molecular
dynamics), and (inverse) kinematics.

Within the scope of an INRIA (*) Research Action, a one year postdoc
position geared towards the investigation of protein flexibility is
available. The research action involves computer scientists and
structural biologists. Its goal is to develop approaches to model
flexibility based on geometric and topological tools. Two topics of
special interest are the representation and the clustering of
collections of conformations, and the identification of correlated
motions amongst MD trajectories of atoms. Interested applicants should
hold a PhD in Computer Science or Applied Mathematics or Biophysics or
Molecular Modeling.

The funding corresponds to a 6 months period at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis
--located on the French Riviera, and then another 6 months period at
Institut Pasteur Paris. The position will start in-between October 2006
and January 2007, depending on the successful applicant's
constraints.

(*)INRIA is the French National Research Institute for Computer
Science and Control
