REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS
THE PIERRE BÃZIER AWARD
2007 Inaugural Award
Sponsored by the
Solid Modeling Association
(http://www.solidmodeling.org)
in conjunction with
The ACM Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling and Applications

2007 Pierre BÃzier Award Committee
Committee Chair:
Christoph Hoffmann, Purdue University, USA
Committee Members:
Martii MÃntylÃ, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland
Michael Pratt, LMR Systems, UK
William Regli, Drexel University, USA
Jan Vandenbrande, The Boeing Company, USA
Award Description:
With the approval of the family of the late Pierre BÃzier, the Solid
Modeling Association has established The Pierre BÃzier Award for
Solid, Geometric and Physical Modeling and Applications.
Pierre BÃzier is one of the founders of the fields of solid, geometric
and physical modeling. Beginning with his work on representing
curves, and continuing through his work on one of the first CAD/CAM
systems at Renault (UNISURF), Pierre BÃzier led the transformation of
design and manufacturing, through mathematics and computing tools,
into computer aided design and three dimensional modeling. He made
contributions to computer control, interactive free-form curve and
surface design and 3D milling for manufacturing clay models and
masters. BÃzier's approach to research exemplifies how the problems
from the real world can drive scientific inquiry and lead to
engineering accomplishments.
In the time since the 1950s, the solid, geometric and physical modeling
has matured, resulting in a rich set of theories, mathematics and
algorithms that define and manipulate representations of physical
objects, their properties, and their associated abstractions. These
representations are intimately tied to processes (such as simulation,
design, manufacturing, and analysis) and application domains
(automotive, aerospace, bio-medical, graphic arts, etc). These
representations support the creation, exchange, simulation,
visualization, animation, interrogation, and annotation of the digital
models of the objects and their evolution.
The inaugural Pierre BÃzier Award will be presented at the 2007 ACM
Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling Conference, June 4-6, 2007,
at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. The award will carry with it
an associated honorarium and a variety of sponsorship opportunities
are available. Organizations interested in sponsoring the
Pierre BÃzier Award may contact sponsor@bezier.cs.drexel.edu to obtain
a sponsorship packet.
Nomination Process and Timeline:
The Pierre BÃzier Award is the most prestigious award of the Solid
Modeling Association. The award may be given to an individual or
group of individuals nominated for contributions of a technical nature
made to solid, geometric or physical modeling and applications. The
contributions should be of lasting and major technical importance. As
an award, The Pierre BÃzier Award is modeled directly after the
Association of Computing Machinery's A.M. Turing Award
(www1.acm.org/awards/taward.html).
The Pierre BÃzier Award nomination form is available at
http://gicl.cs.drexel.edu/bezier-nomination.doc
The committee requests nominations be submitted by email to:
nominations@bezier.cs.drexel.edu
All nominees will be rigorously reviewed by the Committee and external
referees selected from solid modeling and related disciplines. An
awardee will be chosen by the Committee based on the strength of the
nomination dossier and the inputs of the external referees.
Individuals or groups of individuals can be put forth by multiple
nominators. Coordinated nominations (i.e. a collective nomination by
a group) are also welcome.
Timeline:
Nomination Deadline:
February 28, 2007, 24:00 GMT
Award Announcement:
