The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg seeks an outstanding scholar for the post of Professor of Computer Science and Head of the School of Computer Science. The University wishes to strengthen ICT programmes in general and Computer Science in particular. In accordance with its strategic goals, the University is committed to promoting excellence in both teaching and research.
The School has played a leading role in curriculum development internationally and has developed international research links in a number of areas. The School?s mission is to address dynamic African needs by developing highly educated students and pursuing research in computer science.

Various research directions are currently pursued in the School:
? Algorithms and parallelization: bio-informatics, computational linguistics, computational geometry and image processing
? Theoretical computer science, in particular formal languages and process algebras
? Computer science education
? Computational Science: grid computing, Square Kilometer Array
? Rural computing.

The School seeks a visionary and innovative academic leader who possesses significant academic management and administrative skills and a commitment to strengthening our education, research, and outreach programmes. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong record of research and scholarly activity, a commitment to graduate and undergraduate education and proven leadership, communication, and administrative skills.

Requirements:
? Doctorate in Computer Science and an independent post-doctoral research profile
? Excellent written and verbal communication skills
? Experience in attracting research funding
? Evidence of postgraduate supervision
? Management experience

Duties:
? Lead the School in its pursuit of excellence in research and teaching
? Head and academic manager of School
? Enhance research and postgraduate studies through external funding.

Salary: dependent on qualifications and experience. 

Starting date: as soon as possible.
