Ph.D. Positions in Algorithms, Computational Geometry, and Applications
at University of Lugano, Switzerland
========================================================================

The University of Lugano, Faculty of Informatics,
http://www.inf.unisi.ch/, invites applications for Ph.D. positions in
the area of Algorithms, Computational Geometry, Generalized Voronoi
Diagrams and related Applications. For information on the application
procedure see http://www.inf.unisi.ch/education/phd/.

The University of Lugano is a new dynamic University located in the
Canton of Ticino, the southernmost province of Switzerland. The Faculty
of Informatics was established in October 2004 and offers Bachelor's,
Master's, and PhD degrees in Computer Science. The official working and
teaching language is English. Research of the current faculty falls in
the areas of software engineering, design and analysis of algorithms,
computational science, distributed systems, networking, information
retrieval, programming languages, automatic verification, computer
architecture. The faculty's research has enjoyed funding from the Swiss
National Science Foundation, the European Union, and other funding
organizations. For more information please see http://www.inf.unisi.ch.

Applicants should have a strong background in computer science or
closely related fields such as applied mathematics or engineering with
an emphasis in computer science, and a keen interest in algorithmic
problems. Students with a strong background in the design and analysis
of algorithms will be preferred. Fluency in English is required. The
selected candidates, together with the starting group on geometric
algorithms, will attack some challenging open problems on generalized
Voronoi diagrams as driven from concrete applications. Close
collaboration with the algorithms group at IDSIA (Istituto Dalle Molle
di Studi sull'Intelligenza Artificiale http://www.idsia.ch/) and other
research institutions in Switzerland or abroad will be strongly encouraged.

The positions come with a competitive scholarship and salary. The
application procedure is explained at
http://www.inf.unisi.ch/education/phd/: interested applicants should
apply as soon as possible. If you have questions please do not hesitate
to contact Professor Evanthia Papadopoulou
(evanthia.papadopoulou[at]unisi.ch, web page
http://www.inf.unisi.ch/faculty/papadopoulou).
